PHILADELPHIA — Trea Turner thrilled the crowd when he scored from second base on a passed ball during the fourth inning of the Phillies' matchup with San Francisco Giants on Friday night.
A few moments later, that exhilaration turned to worry.
The Phillies' shortstop left the game after that play with left hamstring soreness. The play propelled the Phillies to a 4-3 win before 40,888 fans at Citizens Bank Park.
Afterward, Turner said he will go for testing Saturday and will need at least a couple of days off.
“I’ve never really had anything like this, to be honest with you,†Turner said. “They seemed pretty positive in the training room, so I was pretty happy with that or at least more positive that what I thought. I’m definitely feeling it, but we’ll take it day-by-day.â€

Turner said he felt the injury happen a couple of steps from home plate.
“It just got real sore,†Turner said.
The played showed Turner's speed and baseball smarts. The pitch was ball four to Bryce Harper. Catcher Tom Murphy dropped the ball, and it rolled toward the backstop. Murphy didn't exactly sprint after the pitch.
“Just the way the pitcher and catcher reacted,†Turner said. “I was running decently hard toward third. I just felt like they were far from home plate. It would have taken a great play to get me out. That’s kind of how I saw it in my head.â€
Turner began Friday batting .336 with two home runs and nine RBIs. He was 2 for 3 with a stolen base and a run scored before leaving the game.
“It's a huge loss,†Phillies manager Rob Thomson said of what it would mean if Turner had to miss time. “He’s Trea Turner, one of the best players in baseball. I don’t know what the results are going to be, but we'll find out tomorrow.â€
Thomson said Edmundo Sosa, who replaced Turner on Friday, would probably fill in at shortstop for Turner. Thomson said second baseman Bryson Stott is not a candidate to play shortstop because he rarely takes ground balls at the position during pre-game workouts.
Turner plans to recover as quickly as possible.
“I hate being hurt,†he said. “I promise you it’s not going to be fun for the training staff because I wear them out. They’ll want me on the field more than I want to be on the field.â€
